An Online Users Guide to Opus(tm)
---------------------------------
Enhancements to an idea by an unknown author
This version written by Simon Blears
SysOp of Lightning BBS (3:690/903 or 3:690/0)
(+619) 275-7900 at v21, v22, v23, v22bis, PEP
What is it?
-----------
Well, I've always wanted to have an online User Manual for Opus. I've always
had the actual manual (v0.00, is there a later one?) online for users to
download, but, as I'm sure you're all aware, users tend to have a reluctance
to download anything that's important!
I obtained a program from 3:711/805 called GUIDE. This was exactly what I
wanted! But, there was one BIG problem! The .ARC file was corrupt and a good
version of it wasn't available, so I decided to write it myself.
What does it do?
----------------
There are several files, the same structure as the bulletin menus that some of
you may already use. The user selects from a menu of topics and is given the
relevant part of the User Manual. Each 'page' has the option to continue
(return key supported) or to abort and return to the GUIDE menu.
How do I install it?
--------------------
Well, if you're anything like me or the rest of the guys in this net, you'll
have looked at the files already, so I'll keep it short! unARC the file
GUIDE_2.ARC into your scratch directory (what, you don't have a directory
called TEMP? I thought everyone did!) and the run the GUIDEINS batch file
with the drive that you're going to be running them from (usually C) after the
GUIDEINS command. ie:
GUIDEINS C - This will install the files for drive c
GUIDEINS D - This will install the files for drive d
etc
Simple huh? Well, I hope so. You can do them manually if you prefer (you'd
have to be mad!) The next thing is to alter you BULLETIN screen, or whatever
screen you want to call GUIDE from. ie:
What option do you require? R123
U1SC:\opus\misc\guide
U2SC:\opus\misc\rules
U3SC:\opus\misc\bulletin
Refer to your SysOp manual for more info as to how to build this type of file.
The C:\ in the above example will, of course, be whatever drive you are
running off (the same one you used in GUIDEINS).
Well, that's about all. Hope this is of use to you and your users, I've had
several favourable reports already.
LICENSE
-------
You are hereby granted an unconditional license to use, copy, erase, wipe,
delete, alter or anything else you can think of this group of files. I don't
intend to charge you $10 for the use of it, after all, you wouldn't pay $10
would you? <grin> Please feel free to distribute it as far and wide as
possible. The only thing I'd ask is that it would be *nice* to receive an
idea of how far afield of Australia this file gets, drop me a line on
3:690/903 sometime.
ENHANCEMENTS
------------
As I said, this group of files already exists somewhere, but I've made some
enhancements to the original concept.
o The dropthru option now works, if a user presses Return at
a [Y/n] prompt, the answer Y will be assumed.
o A .GBS opening screen. I *will* get around to OANSIfying
the whole box and dice, but after the New Year, huh? I
haven't even attempted that one yet!
o Added a couple of screens to the original which I felt were
relevant.
That's really it this time! Have fun.
Ooops, just though of something, if your directory is \opus\misc off
the root, you've got some changes to do!
The batch files uses the *great* PD utility called CHANGE. The syntax
for this utility is as follows:
CHANGE filename.ext "target string" "new string" (for text conversion)
or
CHANGE filename.ext nnnnnnnn aaaaaaaa (where nn and aa are decimal)
Send E-Mail if you need more help, but you're a SysOp so you should be
able to work it out <smile>
That is REALLY it!
